Jerry Jones realizes that Dallas Cowboys fans have had enough of the product that has been put on the field. Jones recently commented on the lack of enthusiasm Cowboys fans showed during the preseason.
Dallas Cowboys fans didn’t show up to camp like usual
As previously discussed on GH, fan attendance was down for the Cowboys’ open practices at training camp in California. Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott said he didn’t understand why fans didn’t show up en masse this summer.
“It seems like a little bit fewer people than the last couple of times I’ve been out here.” Why? “I don’t know,” Elliott said. “I feel like normally, the first couple of days of camp, it would be packed. But I don’t know why.”
Jerry Jones blames playoff losses for fan apathy
The owner of the Cowboys thinks he knows why fans aren’t showing up. Per Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Jones blamed fan apathy on the Cowboys’ inability to deliver in the postseason:
“We all know what the issue is here,” Jones said. “Our [lack of] success in the postseason. We haven’t had it. We know that. Our fans know that. Everybody knows it. These players know it. [Coach] Mike [McCarthy] knows it. His staff knows it. That’s the elephant in the room. We got to go take the next step and we haven’t done that, and until we do it there will be frustration.”
The Cowboys didn’t do enough in the offseason for fans to care
Maybe Jones doesn’t have a pulse on his fanbase.
The Cowboys have lost in the playoffs for decades with fans remaining hopeful for the next season. Something changed this offseason.
Micah Parsons asked for the front office to add help to the roster. Jones said he planned to go “all-in” this season. The Cowboys didn’t. With a week left before the regular season starts, only CeeDee Lamb has signed a contract extension with Parsons, and Dak Prescott left waiting for the offseason.
Jones’ decision to delay extensions meant the team operated on a shoestring budget in free agency. The Cowboys didn’t keep all of their core players from last season.
Cowboys fans know the team has regressed on paper. They’ve also seen the NFC East get better on paper this offseason.
Fans aren’t pessimistic about the postseason. They’re not sure if the team is even good enough to make the playoffs.
