The Dallas Cowboys officially closed the door on bringing back All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore for the 2024 season. Gilmore had a solid season with the Cowboys last season.
In the offseason, Gilmore said his goal was to return to play in Dallas this season. However, the Cowboys front office was wishy-washy on the subject. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said early in the offseason that the Cowboys like Gilmore, but they had to be cautious about who they pick and choose this year.
The Cowboys have been really picky since owner Jerry Jones said he wanted to go all-in on the team. They didn’t choose to sign many free agents, and they still haven’t signed their core players to contract extensions.
Stephon Gilmore signed with the Minnesota Vikings
As previously discussed on GH, Gilmore signed with the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday morning:
Gilmore has been one of the top veteran cornerbacks in the entire sport and has officially found a home for the 2024 season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Stephon Gilmore has agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with $7 million guaranteed to join the Minnesota Vikings.
The Dallas Cowboys are being cheap
Per Over the Cap, the Cowboys have $28 million in cap space. They could have chosen to sign Gilmore at the Vikings’ price.
The Jones family has decided to be frugal this summer.
Per Over the Cap, the Cowboys have spent the least active cash in the league this year, at about $208 million. Their cash-to-cap ratio is the lowest in the league, at 0.8440. Compare that to the Cowboys’ rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, who have spent the second most active cash in the league, at $351 million, and have a cash-to-cap ratio of 1.5969.
Cowboys fans react to team losing out on Gilmore
I cannot believe the Cowboys did not bring back Stephon Gilmore.

Jerry Jones needs to get out of the way and let “professional people” make that team , Jerry is a nightmare for Cowboy managers

Jerry doesn’t want this team to win! Clear as day

The cowboys are not all in as jerry claims

Could not afford him. They got bigger financial issues. This is what happens when you overpay for a mediocre QB

The owner who doesn’t care about ceedee? Shocker

Skip, the Cowboys do not have a real GM. I’ve been a Cowboys fan since 1977. I’m going on record, today. The Cowboys will not make the playoffs, this season.
