Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones recently appeared on FOX Sports’ The Herd with Colin Cowherd to discuss different NFL topics, and towards the end of the eight-minute interview, Jones and Cowherd talked about Mike Vrabel’s inability to land a new HC role this summer.
According to reports, the reason why he has yet to land a new job is because Mike Vrabel “scared” various NFL teams during the coaching search since he is a “very large human,” which is quite absurd, according to Jones.
“This is ridiculous. I don’t understand this right here. I always truly felt that the team takes on the coach’s mindset. When you have a big, physical coach, you’re going to have a physical football team,” said Jones.
“If you wanna call Coach Mike big, then just call him big,” he added.
What was said about Mike Vrabel’s “size”?
NFL insider Dianna Russini was one of the first to report on this Mike Vrabel situation during her recent appearance on The Athletic Football Show.
“He’s a very large human being, which can be very intimidating to people in an organization who are going to be part of these decisions. And that is a factor,” said Russini, based on what an NFL GM told her.
“I said, ‘Stop, that’s not something that’s real. Who cares what someone physically looks like?'” added Russini. “And he said, ‘I’m just telling you. I’ve been in rooms, and somebody’s physical presence can make a difference.'”
Before being a coach, Mike Vrabel played linebacker for 14 NFL seasons. According to Pro Football Reference, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year stands at 6’4″ and 261 pounds. By comparison, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is at 6’5″ and 265 pounds.
Why Mike Vrabel should have a new HC job soon, according to Colin Cowherd
“I do think with their size and physicality, it’s easier for them to relate to some players, and those coaches’ teams are all known as physical and tough,” said Cowherd. “They have an alpha; it bleeds to the team.
“But if a GM is worried about being intimidated (by Vrabel), it’s probably a team you don’t want to work for,” he added.
As of this writing, Mike Vrabel remains one of the top coaching candidates out there. Given his credentials and ability to collaborate, Vrabel should be able to land a good opportunity very soon.
