The San Francisco 49ers added depth to a pass-catching position after reports came out that starting wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered an injury in Week 3. Samuel suffered rib and knee injuries during the 49ers win over the New York Giants. He missed practice Wednesday.
Samuel’s addition to the injury report is bad news for a team that is suffering at depth at wide receiver. Brandon Aiyuk is battling a shoulder injury.
With those injuries, the 49ers added another tight end to their practice squad.

Tonges played for California in college and was signed by the Chicago Bears as a UDFA in 2022. He appeared in four games for the Bears and had one passing target last season. Tonges played 11 snaps on special teams.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is big on using tight ends in his offensive scheme, especially for the run game. We’ll see if Tonges receives an elevation with all of the injuries going on at wide receiver.
