For Doug Pederson and the Jacksonville Jaguars, they know that they need to provide as much protection as they can to allow Trevor Lawrence as much time as possible to make the right reads.
The offensive line will be vital in protecting Lawrence behind the line of scrimmage, and a strong center will be critical for the team’s chances of making an improbable Super Bowl run in 2024.
They may have found the player who can help them jump back into playoff contention after signing a former member of an AFC East powerhouse.
Jacksonville Jaguars sign Mitch Morse to a two-year deal to be their starting center
According to John Shipley of Sports Illustrated, Mitch Morse will be playing for the Jaguars on a two-year, $10.5-million deal with $7 million of the money guaranteed.
He also wrote that it was easy for Morse to make the decision to move to Duval County after the Bills released him last week:
Morse has a connection to Pederson after starting 15 games at center for the Chiefs as a rookie in 2015, which was Pederson’s final year as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. The Chiefs selected Morse in the second round that offseason.
How will Morse fare with the Jacksonville Jaguars?
The Jaguars will be getting a talented big man who can handle defensive tackles who want to rush the QB under center. While his 6’6″, 305-lb frame is nothing to scoff at, he has a similar play style to Jason Kelce who uses speed and finesse to stop defensive linemen from getting to his quarterback.
His snap counts tell you all you need to know about how important Morse will be for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s started in every game he’s available in, which says a lot about the 31-year-old’s ability to protect his field general.
If there’s any knock on his game, he cannot stay healthy for certain stretches. However, both Lawrence and Mac Jones will be happy to have him leading pass protection for them in the 2024 season.
