The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to build off of last year’s success. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence and new head coach Doug Pederson looked like a match made in heaven. The team won a playoff game before falling to the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs. Tight end Evan Engram was a huge part of the offense last year and they placed the franchise tag on him. With the deadline for extensions looming, the team signed Engram to a three-year deal.
Jacksonville Jaguars Extend Evan Engram
The contract is a three-year, $41.25 million with $24 million of that guaranteed. Both sides seemed eager to get a deal done but as Monday’s deadline got closer, many wondered whether Engram would have to play on the tag next year and prove he can put multiple good seasons together. The former first-round pick had disappointed in his time in New York but looked very comfortable in Pederson’s offense. Jaguars fans should be very happy to see Engram back in the fold.
Expectations For 2023
The AFC is a tough conference but the Jaguars have the easiest path in the AFC. Their division is by far the worst in the conference. The Titans always play above expectations but both the Colts and Texans feel like they are a couple of years away from actually competing for the division title. The Jaguars should be the favorite in the AFC South meaning that if they win, they would host a playoff game in the first round. The expectation is that they win the division based on the rest of the teams so there is some pressure there but they should be able to achieve that goal.
Jacksonville Jaguars fans should be very happy about the Evan Engram extension. The offense looked good last year and now they will have another year of Pederson’s system under their belt.
