The Florida Gators will have a lot of expectations to take another step in 2025. After finishing 7-5 in 2024, Florida needs to show that they could be in playoff talks for the 2025 season.

The Gators decided to keep head coach Billy Napier around for another season. This will be his fourth season. One of the reasons why Florida decided to keep Napier around for another year is because of the potential of quarterback D.J. Lagway. Lagway should a ton of potential when he was on the field during his freshman season. He showed his ups and downs, but the potential is there for him.
Florida Gators Committed To D.J. Lagway For the Next Couple Of Seasons

If Florida is going to take the next step, Lagway is going to have perform better during his sophomore season than what he did during his freshman season. He only completed 59.9% of his passes for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Lagway only rushed for 101 yards on 50 carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 2.0 yards per carry.
Well, Adam Rittenberg of espn.com went into depth for all power four conference teams entering the 2025 season and beyond. He talked about whether the Gators have a potential multi-year starting quarterback moving forward. Rittenberg said,
“Extremely likely. Florida rightfully is riding with Lagway and the only question entering 2025 concerns his shoulder/elbow health. The team added some veteran insurance behind him with Louisville transfer Harrison Bailey.”
As long as Lagway stays healthy, there is no doubt that Florida can win at least eight games during the 2025 college football season. The toughest games on the Gators schedule will be against the LSU Tigers, the Texas Longhorns, and the Georgia Bulldogs. Other than those three games, Florida can finish with a 9-3 record depending on how things playout.
It will be important for Lagway to get Florida into the college football playoff conversation also. If he can do that for the Gators in 2025, then Florida could be knocking on the door for an actual playoff berth the following season in 2026 as well.
