After the Houston Texans suffered a heartbreaking home defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars that ended with a missed “doink” field goal from backup kicker, Matt Ammendola, to send the game to OT (and was subsequently waived by the team), the league’s youngest franchise have started to make some changes…
Some have been forced, such as having to find a replacement for key offensive lineman and former first round pick, Tytus Howard, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season earlier on Wednesday.
Now, the Texans have decided to make a change at another core position, this time concerning a face that will be familiar to NFL fans, especially those of fellow AFC South competitors, the Jacksonville Jaguars – per Jordan Schultz.

Why Did The Houston Texans Cut Shaquill Griffin?
Shaquill Griffin, after being a third round pick for the Seattle Seahawks back in 2017, overplayed his draft status considerably. He became a full time starter in 2018, where he was subsequently re-united with his brother, Shaquem Griffin, who, at the time, hit the headlines for his unusual and highly impressive playing situation.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and signed a 3 year, $45 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 before being cut at the end of the 2022 season, in March 2023. So, having had the good fortune to be a free agent for the Houston Texans, why would they release a player of this calibre being on a sale-price 1 year, $3.5 million dollar deal?
Well, for one thing, Shaquil Griffin failed to play up to his bidding and take that #2 outside corner spot away from Steven Nelson to play opposite former #3 overall pick in 2022, Derek Stingley Jr. In fact, the situation had gotten so dire for Griffin that Week 12’s loss to his former team, the Jaguars, was the second consecutive game in which he did not play a single snap on the defensive side of the ball.
Needless to say, it was abundantly clear that Griffin’s services were no longer required, and the Texans are consequently promoting another former pro-bowler, Desmond King, off of the practice squad to replace him.
Shaquill Griffin will now hit waivers, where we will wait and see if there is a team that feels they can still get good quality play out of the veteran 28 year old corner, who theoretically should still be in and around his prime years.
