You read the title correctly, the Houston Texans were able to win convincingly against the Cleveland Browns in the AFC Wild Card Round and as a result, they improved their 2024 NFL draft position. How is that even possible? Glad you asked.
The Houston Texans traded away quarterback Deshaun Watson a few years ago to the Cleveland Browns and got a handful of draft picks as a result. The Texans received the Browns’ 2022 first, 2022 fourth, 2023 first, 2023 third, 2024 first and 2024 fourth-round picks. That means the Texans have improved their draft selection by eliminating the Cleveland Browns as they hold the first and fourth-round picks.
While we will not officially know what pick they will have due to how the remainder of the Wild Card Weekend games shape out. This pick will be anywhere between 19-24 as that is where the Wild Card Round losers will be. Depending on the records of the losing teams, the pick will fluctuate. Either way you spin it, the Houston Texans won today.
Who has the Houston Texans picked up as a result of the Deshaun Watson trade with the Cleveland Browns?
When taking a look at the trade almost complete to this point, the Texans have shown to get significant talent that is playing well. The front office actually used both the first-round picks so far in trades to get higher in the draft as Houston targeted players and got who they were eyeing. Below is the list of the players they have drafted with those Cleveland picks and remember they hold the Browns’ first and fourth-round selections in April’s draft.
- 2022 first-round: OG Kenyon Green
- 2022 fourth-round: RB Dameon Pierce
- 2023 first-round: DE Will Anderson Jr.
- 2023 fourth-round: WR Tank Dell
