The Houston Texans finalized the trade for Stefon Diggs today. Diggs’s contract was updated in exciting ways.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, as part of the Buffalo-Houston trade, the Texans wiped out the final three years on Diggs’ contract, allowing him to become a free agent after this season.
The Texans also took the $3.5 million guaranteed to Diggs next season and moved up into this season, giving him a raise and assuring him of $22.52 million in guaranteed money in 2024.
If Diggs plays the way he wants, and Houston hopes, he will hit the free-agent market next offseason with the ability to make it count. Houston is hoping for the best version of Stefon Diggs.
Houston Texans Finalize Diggs Trade
Houston traded a second-round pick to secure Stefon Diggs’ services for one season after the contract change.
Diggs is now in a position to have the ability to negotiate yet another long-term contract.
If Stefon Diggs leaves as a free agent next offseason, Houston would be positioned to receive a compensatory pick for his departure.
According to ESPN.com, Diggs, a three-time captain with the Bills, they signed a four-year, $104 million contract extension with the team in April 2022. According to the Roster Management System, the Bills will carry a dead money charge of $31.096 million next season after trading Diggs. That will be the highest known dead money charge ever for a wide receiver in any season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
Texans-Diggs Trade Announcement
The trade was originally announced yesterday without the exact details. We now know The Texans acquired Diggs, sending Buffalo a 2025 second-round pick (via the Minnesota Vikings). Houston also acquired two draft picks: a 2024 sixth-round pick (No. 189 overall) and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
The Texans acquired that 2025 second-round pick from the Vikings when they traded their 2024 first-round pick to Minnesota last month.
