After an incredible rookie season with the Houston Texans, there’s nowhere to go but up for CJ Stroud in the 2024 season. In fact, as early as now, some already see him having an MVP-caliber campaign when the new season rolls on.
The Texans failed to advance beyond the divisional round of the playoffs, but Stroud has certainly impressed with his performance throughout the season. Aside from the numerous rookie records he set in his first year as a pro, he proved that he’s no fluke when he led Houston to a Wild Card win over the Cleveland Browns–becoming the youngest starting QB ever to win a postseason showdown.
Stroud is a finalist for the NFL Rookie of the Year award, and he’s likely to bag it considering what he has done.
Now, with one year of experience under his belt, an NFC executive sees Stroud competing for the MVP award in 2024. The said exec who talked to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN highlighted that Stroud’s “poise” really stand out.
Here’s what Fowler wrote in his article where he noted that Stroud could be a Top 3 MVP candidate next season”
Stroud’s rookie year for the ages caught everyone’s attention. The Texans QB threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions despite missing two games and dealing with several injuries at wide receiver and on the offensive line, earning him much respect in league circles.
“Poise is so underrated in our league, especially at quarterback, and he clearly has it,” an NFC executive said. “Throws the ball very well at all levels. Arrow definitely pointing out. And he’s got talent around him.”
It will definitely be intriguing to see how CJ Stroud performs in his second season. As everyone knows, rookies with big debut years are often prone to sophomore slumps, especially since it’s often difficult to live up to heightened expectations for a player that is still developing.
Nonetheless, as the NFC exec who talked to Fowler said, Stroud didn’t look like a rookie at all. That should bode well in his second year where everyone expects him to make a big leap.
What Houston Texans’ CJ Stroud Needs To Do To Win MVP
Of course competing for the MVP award is difficult. CJ Stroud finished his rookie season with the Houston Texans with 4108 passing yards and 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He had a 63.9 percent completion rate, all while leading the team to a top-seed finish in the AFC South.
In comparison, Lamar Jackson–the favorite to win the 2023 MVP award–had 3678 passing yards and 24 touchdowns on 67.2 percent completion rate. The Baltimore Ravens star also rushed for 821 yards and five TDs.
With Jackson’s incredible two-way play, the Ravens finished with a league best 13-4 record (which could have been 14-3 had they not rested in Week 18).
With that being said, not only does Stroud need to increase his production to be considered for the MVP award, but the Texans must also keep winning games for him to even be considered for the honor. Topping the league will increase his chances for sure.
