The Houston Cougars had a rough season in the Big 12 this year. They went 2-7 in the conference and 4-8 overall leaving the program with a lot of questions heading into 2024. As is the case with many struggling programs, the transfer portal takes away some promising players. Talented wide receiver Matthew Golden announced he is entering the transfer portal.

Houston Cougars WR Matthew Golden Enters Transfer Portal
Golden has been with the Houston program for two years. In that time he has amassed 76 receptions for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns. While he hasn’t had a huge season overall, there was a lot of promise shown by the young receiver. This is a move likely motivated by NIL money. Former head coach Dana Holgorsen revealed in an interview in November that Golden had six-figure offers from some SEC schools. He is the ninth member of the Cougars to enter the portal.
A New Big 12
Texas and Oklahoma are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. While the Sooners are on the schedule for 2024, it will be a non-conference matchup. The rest of the schedule features a lot of winnable games with Utah likely being the hardest opponent on the schedule. While everyone has been looking at how this will affect the SEC landscape, the Big 12 landscape will also go under a massive change as well. If Houston can land some quality talent, they might be able to compete sooner rather than later.
Can the Houston Cougars get back to their winning ways in 2024? They will have to do it without one of their up-and-coming receivers.
