With the 2023 NFL season nearing its conclusion, the NFL Hall of Fame is slowly getting attention. It gives great players who were elite during their playing days a chance to shine one more time, after all.
The 2024 Hall of Fame class may not have as much star power compared to previous years, but die-hard fans understand that they are fantastic players who elevated the game to the level that is being played and enjoyed today.
This piece will look into three of the most eligible names for this year’s class and make arguments as to why they should make the cut.
2024 NFL Hall of Fame Nominees
Antonio Gates
One of the top players in the 2024 class is Antonio Gates, who entered the league as a standout basketball player with no significant football experience. The 6’4, 255-lb tight end spend all 16 years of his professional career with the Chargers organization, completing 955 catches for 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns.
He’s widely considered as someone who transformed the tight end position and paved the way for players like Travis Kelce and George Kittle to thrive in today’s NFL. While the Chargers didn’t win a single Super Bowl during his time there, he’s honored by being included in the team’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team and the NFL’s All-Decade Team for 2000-2009.
Devin Hester
Rarely does a special teams player make the NFL Hall of Fame, but you can count on them to have had incredible careers when they do. Devin Hester is a one-of-a-kind punt returner who is still widely considered to be the best returner in NFL history.
People still talk about the incredible kickoff return TD he did to Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. What’s even more impressive is that he did all of those as a rookie.
His WR career isn’t anything to write home about: he caught for 3311 yards and 16 TDs. However, to carve am outstanding career as a return man should easily get him into Canton.
Dwight Freeney
Indianapolis Colts fans would be most familiar with Dwight Freeney during the 2000s. When he first entered the league as a 6’1″ defensive end, many believed that it wouldn’t take long before he found himself out of the league.
However, his patented spin move and lightning-fast agility allowed him to get an incredible 125.5 sacks over a 16-year career. He laid the foundation for speed rushers to come in and wreck quarterbacks in the NFL, which makes him deserving of the spot.
