The New York Jets and Haason Reddick could be about to part ways, even before the veteran pass rusher has ever stepped foot in the team’s facility.
Tuesday, less than 48 hours after hiring Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent, Reddick was granted permission by the Jets to seek a trade, a league source confirms.
Reddick, 30, was acquired by the Jets in a March trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, however, the two sides haven’t agreed on the terms of a potential long-term contract extension and Reddick has accrued millions of dollars in fines by continuing his holdout six weeks into the regular season.
As the November 5 NFL trade deadline looms on November 5, Reddick may become the most coveted player available at a limited pass-rush market.
Sunday, after All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury when he fractured his tibia in a 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Detroit Lions may be the favorites to land Reddick.
One high-ranking NFL executive believes Lions general manager Brad Holmes is one of the elite roster-builders in the sport, which could make a blockbuster trade more likely, especially after Hutchinson’s injury.
“It isn’t just about talent acquisition,” an NFL Executive tells me. “But its about roster construction, and that’s where Brad is at the top of the league.”
After all, the Lions have the cap space and the need at pass rusher on a roster that is built to compete for a Super Bowl as early as this season.
Through the first seven seasons of his career, Reddick has produced 58 sacks with 410 total tackles, and was a driving force on the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense that helped power a run to the Super Bowl in 2022.
