The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears have one of the oldest rivalries in professional sports. While Chicago dominated the rivalry for two decades in the 1970s and 1980s, the Packers have won the majority of their matchups against the Bears for the better part of 30+ years. In fact, the Bears have yet to beat the Packers since Matt LaFleur took over as Green Bay’s head coach in 2019.
Of course, much of the Packers’ dominance over the Bears has had a great deal to do with the Hall of Fame quarterback play Green Bay has had since 1992. With Brett Favre under center, the Packers went 22-10 against their rivals to the south. As dominant as he was, though, his heir, Aaron Rodgers, was even better.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Dominated the Chicago Bears
During his time in Green Bay, Favre had a passer rating 84.9, 7,660 passing yards, 53 touchdowns, and 38 interceptions against the Bears. As good as those numbers were, Rodgers’ were even better.
The four-time NFL MVP has a career record of 24-5 against Chicago. In 29 games against the Bears, Rodgers has a 109.0 passer rating, 6,965 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Indeed, Bears fans grew to loathe Rodgers during his time with Packers, something that the future Hall of Famer seemed to relish. He famously screamed “I still own you” to fans after rushing for a touchdown in Chicago towards the end of his tenure in Green Bay. He was met with a flurry of one-fingered salutes.
However, the Bears would probably have loved to have had Rodgers on their team considering their woeful history at the quarterback position. According to one of their players, who is also a former Rodgers teammate, they might have the next Rodgers on their team already.
Chicago Bears Tight End Marcedes Lewis Says Caleb Williams Reminds Him of Aaron Rodgers
In a recent interview on the show “All Facts No Brakes,” Bears tight end Marcedes Lewis, who played with Rodgers in Green Bay for five seasons, said of Caleb Williams (via Fox Sports)
“I didn’t know what to expect coming in. I didn’t have any expectations for how composed he’d [Williams] be, how he’d act. This guy wants to be great. If he doesn’t do something 100% correct, he’s correcting himself. He can make every throw, a little Aaron Rodgers-esque.
“He’s just different. I’m looking forward to him going out there and competing and showing everybody what he’s been working on because, even within this first week, he’s doing things that you don’t see from a young guy.
“The sky’s the limit for him. He asks all the right questions. He’s a leader, naturally. He doesn’t walk around acting like he knows it all. I’m impressed so far.”
Chicago fans certainly hope that what Lewis said is true. After all, new Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love had a better year in his first year as a starting quarterback than any Bears quarterback has had in the history of their franchise.
Finally having a talented quarterback under center in Chicago may help the rivalry become less one-sided than it has been for over three decades.
