Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre Files Appeal to Overturn Judge’s Recent Ruling

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre was one of the most popular players in the NFL during his playing days. For Packers fans, he was an icon, the quarterback that helped lead the franchise out of a nearly three decades-long period of perennial losing.

Unfortunately, the mystic that once surrounded the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback has been shattered since his retirement. In 2021, Favre, along with former Mississippi governor Phil Bryant, were named in a report that alleges that they stole millions of dollars from the state’s welfare fund to help build a volleyball stadium at the college Favre’s daughter attended.

One of Favre’s business partners, Jake Van Landingham, the founder of the pharmaceutical company Prevacus, has already pled guilty to his role in the scandal.

Last month, one of Favre’s attorneys, Daniel Koevary, had his ability to practice law in the case revoked by Judge E. Faye Patterson.

Patterson’s order reads, in part, “The most recent actions and filings by counsel appear to have been designed to be dilatory and not necessary for the representation of his client. The motions presented herein were deliberately and tacitly designed to undermine the authority of the Court and demonstrate either a misunderstanding of the proper procedures and processes of the rules and the laws of the State of Mississippi or an effort to manufacture issues with the Judiciary.”

Koevary is a New York-based attorney and has denied any wrongdoing. The order, however, also required Favre’s attorney to pay back all costs and expenses for his questionable filings.

There is no report confirming or denying that he paid the required fines.

According to a report posted on ESPN, Favre used another attorney to file an appeal of the July 11 ruling in an effort to get Koevary back on the case. Per the report, the appeal reads,

“Neither Koevary nor other non-local attorneys did anything wrong in representing Favre, let alone anything warranting sidelining them and thereby impinging on Favre’s right and prejudicing Favre by depriving him of the full services of the attorneys with the greatest institutional knowledge of the matter.”

It is noteworthy that Favre is not facing any criminal charges. The statute of limitations for his alleged involvement will soon be up, however, so prosecutors may bring charges soon if they feel they have enough evidence. The fact that no charges have been filed yet would seem to indicate that they do not.

Per ESPN‘s report, Mississippi auditor Shad White has stated that $77 million of welfare funds were misspent between 2016-2019.

John Davis, the former director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, has already pled guilty to misspending some of that money.

In your eyes he is Guilty until proven innocent? Glad you’re not on the jury. Social media and forums like this try very hard to skew the right to legal representation. If the DA had enough EVIDENCE and less speculation, he would have been charged.

Brett Farve should be prosecuted right along with the rest of those involved. He’s just as guilty. If he wanted a volleyball stadium built, he should have paid for it himself. Stealing from poor people and getting away with it because you’re white and privileged should be punished . He’s so confident he’s going to get away with it until all he’s worried about is having his buddy sitting beside him in the courtroom.
