Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is trying to prove his innocence after he was named in a 2021 report that accused him and former Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant of misappropriating the state’s welfare funds in order to build a new volleyball stadium at his daughter’s school. Throughout the entire legal investigations, lawsuits, and trials, Favre and Bryant have maintained their innocence.
Former Governor Bryant has even filed a lawsuit against the news outlet that broke the story. As part of his suit, journalist Anna Wolfe and editor Adam Ganucheau have been ordered by the court to produce documents that would reveal the identities of their confidential sources. Failure to turn in these documents could result in jailtime for both.
The Prosecutor in Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Farve’s Welfare Scandal Is Under FBI Investigation
Back in late May, it was reported that the prosecutor in Favre’s welfare scandal case had his office raided by the FBI.
“The FBI is executing federal search warrants at the multiple locations. The affidavit in support of the search warrants has been sealed by the court and so I am prohibited from commenting further. There is no threat to public safety,” an FBI spokesperson said.
The district attorney in Jackson, Mississippi said in a statement, “This morning, FBI agents came to our offices. We are fully cooperating with their efforts. The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office is fully functioning and continues its work on behalf of the citizens of Hinds County. That has been and will continue to be our primary focus. Currently, we have no further statements.”
There was no indication by the FBI, nor the district attorney, of what actions may have prompted the search.
Now, it sounds like the other side of the case, Favre’s defense, is taking a hit as well.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre’s Lead Defense Attorney Has Been Kicked Off the Case
According to A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports, the judge presiding over the case has issued an order that revokes Favre’s lead lawyer, Daniel Koevary, from practicing law in the case. The order has also demanded that Koevary pay “costs and expenses” for questionable filings within the next 10 days.
Per Perez, “Hinds County Circuit Court Judge E. Faye Peterson, who is presiding over the lawsuit to recover millions in misspent welfare funds, wrote that multiple recent filings by Favre’s legal team have had a ‘pattern and practice of delicate deception with ongoing misapplication of this State’s case law.'”
The order also reads, “The most recent actions and filings by counsel appear to have been designed to be dilatory and not necessary for the representation of his client. The motions presented herein were deliberately and tacitly designed to undermine the authority of the Court and demonstrate either a misunderstanding of the proper procedures and processes of the rules and the laws of the State of Mississippi or an effort to manufacture issues with the Judiciary.”
The order is certainly a blow to Favre’s defense, and certainly does not make his claims of innocence seem very believable.
No replacement as the Hall of Fame quarterback’s lead counsel has been announced.
