On Saturday morning, the San Francisco 49ers signed a former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver. The 49ers needed to add a receiver for training camp amid a dramatic week for the offense, especially at wide receiver.
A dramatic week for the San Francisco 49ers offense
The 49ers are dealing with injury and contract issues at the start of training camp. Offensive tackle Trent Williams is staging a true “hold out” this month as he uses leverage to try and earn a new deal before the season.
At receiver, Brandon Aiyuk is not participating in practice as he stages a “hold-in” at the start of camp. Aiyuk’s absence complicates the flow of training camp because he isn’t the only starting-caliber receiver not practicing.
Earlier in the week, the 49ers placed rookie Rickey Pearsall on the physically unable to perform list due to a hamstring injury. It’s unclear when the 49ers expect Pearsall to return to practice in the preseason.
Frank Darby signed with the 49ers
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the 49ers signed receiver Frank Darby to the roster. The 26-year-old receiver was a 2021 sixth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons. Pearsall has appeared in 16 games during his NFL career. He recorded two receptions for 29 yards.
Darby contributed to the Falcons’ special teams, playing 74 offensive snaps and 166 special teams snaps.
The six-foot-one, 200-pound receiver was a standout for Arizona State.
