After a brief stint with Ohio State, the former Penn State and Houston Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien has found a new home in college.
Bill O’Brien, who coached two seasons for the Nittany Lions in 2012-13, spent last season as the Offensive Coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Now, O’Brien will step back into a head coaching role as he has accepted the job at Boston College. The Eagles lost their Head Coach recently to the NFL, and worked quickly to fill the void.
Former Penn State, Houston Texans Coach Bill O’Brien Accepts Boston College Coaching Role
After a surprise move from former Boston College Head Coach Jeff Hafley left the Eagles without a leader, the program was quick to find their next coach. Hafley cited the massive changes to the landscape of college football as the main reason for his move.
Quickly, the Eagles found their replacement for Hafley in the great state of Ohio, choosing a very familiar name. Bill O’Brien has spent nearly a decade in the collegiate football landscape, as well as spending a decade inside of the NFL. O’Brien was once the Head Coach for the Penn State football team, going 16-9 in two seasons before accepting the Houston Texans Head Coaching gig before the 2014 season.
Now O’Brien has made his way back to a head coaching role with the Boston College Eagles football program. The Eagles finished 7-6 last season with a bowl win over SMU.
A Look Ahead: How Can O’Brien Transform the Boston College Eagles Football Team?
There is no doubt that Hafley leaving the program came as a major surprise, but his reasoning for leaving certainly does not. Many coaches and staff members have become so inundated with recruiting, NIL deals, and the transfer portal that coaching football has become secondary. In the case of Hafley, the coach felt he could not properly coach the team to victory under the new collegiate football circumstances.
O’Brien now takes over for Hafley and adopts a team with plenty of talent, but not yet the results. The new collegiate football realignment has been favorable to some, but for programs like the Boston College Eagles football team, the realignment has brought harder competition into already tough conferences.
In order to be successful with the Eagles, the former Penn State coach will need to bring another influx of talent into the program. Boston College needs to stay competitive to get anywhere in their conference, which means adding big-time players is a must.
Bill O’Brien Prepared to Make Head Coaching Return in Boston
While to some Bill O’Brien might not be the right man for the job, it makes perfect sense. Boston College lost an established coach due to his struggles handling the college football landscape, but O’Brien however is a veteran recruiter and coach. O’Brien has all the tools to succeed at Boston College between his experience and the talent he inherits.
Now, the question will be whether or not O’Brien is able to find some form of success with the Eagles early on.
