The Florida Atlantic University Owls played Michigan State last Friday night with not the outcome they had in mind. This was a close matchup between the Owls and Spartans. Michigan State ended up winning the game 16-10. The Owls will now look to play in their home opener against Army Saturday at 12pm.

Week Two: Army vs. Florida Atlantic University

    Florida Atlantic University
Florida Atlantic quarterback Casey Thompson (11) rushes for a first down in the first quarter against Monmouth at FAU Stadium on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in Boca Raton, FL.

The Owls will take on Army this Saturday for their home opener at FAU Stadium. The Owls are coming off a loss against MSU. Florida Atlantic nearly made a comeback against the Spartans but with 3:27 seconds left in the game a crucial call against MSU was over turned.  An MSU defender appeared to target quarterback Cam Fancher on 4th and 1, prompting the officials to throw out flags for penalty calls. Following video review, the targeting call was overturned, and the Spartans got possession as FAU failed to get first down during their drive.

Following the game head coach Tom Herman had his opinion in the press conference after the game about the targeting call overturned.

“To the guys on the field, he made the right call. So how that gets overturned with clear video evidence that wasn’t targeting? I haven’t seen the replay. A lot of stuff is going on. So as they do, they review every targeting, and somebody in New York or Dallas or wherever they do these things said that that wasn’t targeting, but that it was a late hit, but a late hit, by definition, occurs after the play is dead, and the play then was dead prior to him making no line of gain. So how that wasn’t targeting? I’m a little confused,”

It was a tough loss for the Owls, they had opportunities at different times of the game to capitalize on offense and score points and they just could not find a way. By the time the last drive was deemed dead because of the targeting call overturned, it ended up with a loss for the Owls.

Now heading into week two for the Owls facing Army, the Owls played good defense against MSU and were able to force turnovers, but they face a different challenge this week against Army. Army will run the ball for most of the game and throw some deep balls against the Owls secondary that will catch them off guard.

Army has one of the best rushing attacks, they ran the ball for 375 yards after they defeated Lehigh by a score of 42-7 in their first game. The Owls did play well against MSU but it will take a lot more than just defense for the Owls. The FAU will have to figure things out on offense to score points against Army to have a chance this weekend.
