One FBS head coach has a different outlook for the NCAA’s transfer portal and how he plans to use NIL with players on his team. UAB head coach Trent Dilfer believes this will not only help his team, but also keep power five coaches out of his roster.
According to 247Sports, Dilfer, did not mince words, “I’m attacking tampering. I’m supporting the kid.” In a surprising twist, Dilfer shared a heartfelt tale of bidding farewell to a player bound for a Power Five school. Embracing the absurdity of the situation, Dilfer joked, “I hugged my kid and said, ‘You’ve got family to take care of, dreams to chase, and NFL stardom waiting. But sorry, you can’t be our starter anymore. Go conquer the world.”
Could this be the new normal for conferences outside of the power five
Dilfer later shared his master plan for quarterback Jacob Zeno. In a move that could rival a sitcom plot, Dilfer promised to play the matchmaking guru, calling up SEC schools to find Zeno the perfect post-2023 season match. “I’ll be the SEC’s Cupid, introducing them to their next star quarterback. Who says football can’t have a touch of romance?” quipped Dilfer.
Acknowledging the pressure on his staff, Dilfer admitted, “I’ve put them in a tough spot, but hey, it’s either NFL-level players or a $15 million NIL jackpot. Decisions, decisions.” And to fend off the tampering hordes, Dilfer declared war, warning rival coaches, “Stay out of my roster or face the wrath of my WhatsApp screenshots and IP address tracking skills. It’s like football meets CSI.”
In a surprising turn, Dilfer’s unconventional approach revealed a softer side. He confessed, “We’re nurturing NFL dreams here, and if our players find better opportunities elsewhere, we’re their biggest cheerleaders. We’re like a football family with a ‘take your dreams and go’ policy.”
Jacob Zeno, the loyal disciple, echoed Dilfer’s sentiment, saying, “Coach told me, ‘If a school offers you big money, go for it.’ But really, why wouldn’t I want to stay? Dilfer’s a college legend – Super Bowl champ, the whole deal. Who needs bigger money when you’ve got the Dilfer magic?”
In the realm of UAB football, where Dilfer’s coaching philosophy meets sitcom-worthy scenarios, one thing’s for sure: the laughter is just as infectious as the love for the game.
