NFL fans seemed upset when they reacted to the news surrounding Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes and the Chiefs are getting set to play the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl after an impressive January postseason.
Investigating a Kansas City Chiefs’ equipment malfunction
The league is concerned with one incident that occurred in the Chiefs’ Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins. As discussed previously by McQuade Aronold with GH, the league is looking into the cause of Mahomes’ helmet breaking in sub-freezing temperatures:
Patrick Mahomes was dealing with a pretty concerning situation after a hit to his head resulted in a broken helmet during the Kansas City Chiefs’ win over the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The NFL is investigating the incident as a result.
According to NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller, the NFL has possession of the broken helmet and is investigating what caused it to break:
“Obviously the conditions were extreme and may have contributed to the potential failure in that case,” Miller said according to Pro Football Talk. “We want to know how the helmets perform not just in optimal situations but in extreme situations.
“It happens so seldom, and we’re grateful for that,” Miller said. “The work the manufacturers have done to create better and better helmets with each succeeding helmet is impressive.”
Mahomes’ helmet is relatively new
Mahomes uses a Vicis Zero2 helmet, which came out in February of 2021. While the helmet has been in use for two seasons in the NFL, the league needs to make sure the helmet is safe to use. Hopefully, the league can release its findings before the Super Bowl.
NFL Fans react to the investigation into Mahomes’ helmet
The helmet likely broke because of the “dangerously cold” conditions in which the Chiefs and Dolphins were playing. Most fans on X think it’s obvious the cold temperatures caused the helmet to crack. Here are the best takes on fans reacting to the league’s latest investigation.
It’s not that hard to figure out. It was cold. Ive seen people break off frozen car door handles just by pulling gently on them. Mahomes had a hard collision.

They should get helmet experts, not train experts.

Did they examine Ahmad Bradshaw's helmet after the 2008 NFC Championship Game, as it did EXACTLY the same thing up in frigid Green Bay. Everybody was more focused on the huge upset and Tom Coughlin's vaselined up beet red face. pic.twitter.com/CDZKfPj0OB

Good; maybe they’ll finally start making these helmets out of steel instead of that cheap plastic currently being used

It's almost like cold weather affects football equipment such as deflated footballs
