With the NFL Combine starting with interviews and testing this week, players in the 2024 class are deciding whether they want to participate in testing or save their bodies and just conduct interviews. Projected top 3 pick and University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is planning to save his arm for this year’s combine.
UNC Quarterback Drake Maye Will Only Do Interviews and Physicals at NFL Combine
Maye, who completed 63.3 percent of his passes in 2023 threw for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in his senior season. Maye comes from a line of UNC quarterbacks who have been drafted in recent memory and will be the next man up in that system.
While he has the opportunity to throw in front of scouts at this year’s NFL Combine, Maye is choosing to save his arm and not participate in workouts according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson. However, he will be in Indianapolis for physicals and conducting interviews. Many questioned if Maye should take the field to secure his position amongst the top quarterbacks, but those questions will not be answered.
Maye Holds the UNC Record for Most Passing Yards in a Single Season
While Maye had a strong finish to his college career, his best season was in 2022. Where he won ACC Player of the Year and broke his school record for most passing yards in a single season with 4,321. Maye was also the only player in College Football to throw for 7,000+ yards and rush for 1,000+ yards in the last 2 seasons.
Experts across the NFL have Maye being selected within the top six picks in this year’s draft and going as high as number two. The other top quarterback prospects in Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are not participating in drills at this year’s combine either. Maye will be the latest to join that list.
