Just hours following the shooting that left one dead and 22 injured at the parade for the Kansas City Chiefs, Donald Trump gave a strong message in South Carolina during a rally about gun control. While he never objectively stated this his remarks were in response to the shooting, it isn’t tough to connect the two dots and see that this was intentional.
During the rally, he said the following:
“Nobody took care of our Second Amendment [more than me], during that four-year period, nothing happened with our Second Amendment,” Trump said of his first term in office. “We will protect innocent life, and we will restore free speech.”
Gun Crime Under Donald Trump, Biden

Donald Trump is a clear supporter of the 2nd amendment and seems against most restrictions when it comes to personal firearms. While he was president from 2017-2020, gun violence didn’t rise like it did Barack Obama; however, it also didn’t really go down. It stayed somewhat neutral, with about 30-35 active shooting events per year. It is worth noting that since Biden took office, that has skyrocketed to nearly 60 per year.
However, whoever the current president doesn’t seem to have too much influence on either party when it comes to active shooters. Unfortunately, many of the active shooting sprees occur by people who aren’t legally supposed to have a gun. This very well could be the case for yesterday’s event.
The bottom line is that politicians can make promises; however, fixing the actual issue is much more complicated. The problem is, most of the time, it isn’t law-abiding citizens that cause the issue, it’s people who don’t care what the law says. There is no way to eradicate guns, even if they want to. In other words, they could write whatever laws they want; the kind of sick-minded person that is going to kill people isn’t going to care about the law; they’ll find a gun.
Trump’s Statements Met With Scrutiny
9 kids are probably still in the hospital in Kansas City with gunshot wounds and he’s bragging about this right now.
Just endlessly cruel and obtuse. https://t.co/5oLwNTJrL3

Say what you want about Donald Trump and his strategies. The timing of his statement about the 2nd amendment was ill-timed. His view may or may not be correct, but to say that he will protect people’s rights to have a gun while there are at least nine children injured and many still in the hospital is not the right time to say that. Instead, perhaps his message should have been more focused on having better safety measures or addressing the families.
Regardless, what happened at the Kansas City Chiefs parade is becoming an all too common trend. It doesn’t matter who is president, there needs to be serious discussions on the safety and realistic preventative measures that can be taken.
