The Detroit Lions, in their quest to return to the NFC Championship game, a milestone before 2023 they last achieved in 1991, are leaving no stone unturned. Alongside re-signing key players like kicker Michael Badgley and corner Emmanuel Moseley, the Lions are actively exploring potential trade opportunities. Notably, there are compelling indications, as shared by The Lions Wire managing editor Jeff Rison, that Detroit is eyeing a significant move for Cleveland Browns corner Greg Newsome II.
Detroit Lions: Could Make Move for Starting Corner
From his reliable sources, Risdon suggests that the Detroit Lions have initiated discussions, or at least expressed interest, in Cleveland Browns starting defender Greg Newsome II. This development comes in the wake of the Browns’ recent announcement, as reported by the Washington Post, that they are open to hearing offers for one of their corners.
“Multiple GMs said the Cleveland Browns made it clear they are open to dealing one of their top cornerbacks as they try to balance salaries after years of heavy spending.”

Cleveland houses Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson, and Greg Newsome, one of, if not the best, cornerback groups in the NFL. However, Risdon believes Newsome is the ideal candidate as he enters the fourth year of his rookie contract. Originally an outside corner, Newsome has struggled as a nickel in Cleveland, but a move to Detroit could move him back to his preferred position.
Risdon proposes the Lions part with a 2024 3rd-round pick and a 2025 5th-round pick to acquire the former first-round pick’s services. Detroit would also be wise to lock up the corner as he approaches the end of his rookie deal. In his hypothetical trade scenario, Risdon has Detroit signing Newsome to a three-year, $41.5 million contract ($22.5 million guaranteed).
Greg Newsome II: Entering Fourth NFL Season
Newsome, the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, recorded 37 tackles and nine passes defended as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns. He followed it up with 42 tackles and six passes defended in 2022. Newsome is fresh off his best statistical season, accumulating 49 tackles and 14 passes defended in 2023. He also recorded two interceptions, including a pick-six of MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.
