The Detroit Lions’ meteoric rise under Dan Campbell is the feel-good story of the 2023 NFL season. The fact that they remained competitive against a stacked San Francisco 49ers team is a testament to the work Dan Campbell has put out over the past three years.
Penei Sewell is one of the standout players for this resurging Lions squad. The seventh pick of the 2021 NFL Draft has been a rock for Campbell’s offensive line. One of the Niners’ top players rained praises on the young tackle.
Trent Williams sees himself in Detroit Lions’ Penei Sewell
Trent Williams, the All-Pro offensive lineman who plays left tackle for the Niners, wasn’t shy in raining praises for the 23-year-old who lines up on the right of the center. According to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News, the 35-year-old sees plenty of similarities in their games and loves him for it.
“He’s one of my favorite guys to watch,” Williams said of Sewell this week. “He reminds me a lot of myself. He emulates a lot of things that I do, which impresses me because we never even really worked together, personally, so that means he watches film, means he’s intelligent, he knows when to bring certain things out.”
The team took his compliment in stride and also threw one his way.
Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said this season that Williams represents the ceiling of where the Lions hope Sewell’s game can go.
“That guy’s on another level, and we think Penei can be that same type of player,” Johnson said.
Unfortunately for Sewell’s Lions, they did come up short against Williams’ 49ers in the NFC Championship game. They squandered a 24-7 halftime lead to lose 31-34 after Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey mounted a surprising comeback that the Lions didn’t have the answer to until it was too late.
While the loss is disappointing, the future does look bright for Sewell and Detroit. If the team continues doing the right things and reinforces the right positions, not one eyebrow will be raised if they make the Super Bowl next year.
