As it stands, the Dallas Cowboys and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb haven’t reached an agreement on the latter’s contract. If things go south, thouh, the Detroit Lions can swoop in and acquire the NFL star in an interesting trade idea.
The Cowboys are facing contract negotiations with Lamb, but team owner Jerry Jones has revealed why the team is not rushing to sign him to an extension. Lamb is seeking to become the highest-paid player at his position, but the Cowboys appear hesitant to meet those demands.
Jones acknowledged that he got in “trouble” for saying the team was not “urgent” about getting Lamb’s deal done, but clarified that it’s not about undervaluing the player.
Rather, the Cowboys want to be cautious about exposing key starters like Lamb to injury risk during preseason practices. Jones emphasized that Lamb’s contract situation is not putting any “pressure” on the team, and they plan to extend an offer in the coming days to finalize the deal before the 2024 season.
Detroit Lions Acquire CeeDee Lamb in Intriguing NFL Trade Idea
In the event Lamb and the Cowboys differ in opinion, the latter might entertain the idea of trading him. In an article by Maurice Moton for Bleacher Report, the Lions might be a viable trade partner for Dallas.
“The Detroit Lions have $42.8 million in cap space with a projected $25.1 million for 2025. They can afford to take a big swing right now,” Moton wrote.
“Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson can interchange St. Brown and Lamb in his formations. Both receivers can line up on the inside and outside. When you factor in LaPorta and Gibbs, Detroit’s offense could be a matchup nightmare for opponents,” he added.
Lamb was drafted 17th overall in 2020 on a four-year, $14.01 million fully guaranteed contract with a $7.7 million signing bonus. His rookie deal includes a fifth-year option, but the Cowboys are expected to sign him to a lucrative extension soon to keep the young playmaker in Dallas long-term.
Detroit has both the cap space and a certain role for Lamb to thrive in. If Dallas messes things up with the superstar wide receiver, expect the Lions to keep an eye on the situation and make the most of it if needed.
