The Detroit Lions had an emotional playoff win last night. It was the first home game in 30 years and the first home playoff win in 32 years. Because of this, the Motor City had what felt like everybody in Detroit packed into Ford Field.
This included rapper Eminem, who is a Detroit native and a huge Lions fan. Because of this, NBC cameras showed Eminem in attendance during the game. As a result, Taylor Swift fans used this as an opportunity to touch on what they felt was a double standard.
Taylor Swift Fans Claim Double Standard With Eminem
One Taylor Swift fan posted a tweet that contained an image of Eminem at the Lions playoff game. She captioned the image with a sarcastic message to make a point about people being mad at the coverage Taylor Swift gets at Kansas City Chiefs games. The sarcastic message contained the following:
“Omg they showed Eminem again in the stands! It’s ridiculous and I’m so offended! They’re ruining football.”
This sparked a controversial debate in the replies section. Some football fans and Eminem fans fired back at this sarcasm. Here were some of the notable replies:
“You do realize Eminem is and has always been a big part of Detroit. He’s not there cheering on his boyfriend.”
“Marshall Mathers, raised in Detroit. At Detroit game. The goat isn’t a tourist.”
“Eminem is actually from Detroit and is a legend in the city.”
“Did they discuss him being in attendance the entire week leading up to the game? Spend 10 minutes of pregame talking about him? Have a camera the was trained on him the entire game with scripted commentary? No? Didn’t think so.”
“Em has been a Lions fan for decades tho, he didn’t start liking football and showing up to the games because he’s dating one of the players.”
Detroit Lions Worked With Eminem
To further emphasize this stretch of a claim, Eminem showed his loyalty to the city of Detroit. Not only has the rapper been a fan of the team for decades but he also worked with the Lions to create their playoff hype video. In this video, you can see Eminem walk in front of the camera. He says the following:
“Detroit… Lions… let’s go!” -Eminem
The video then cuts to Detroit Lions highlights throughout the regular season. Of course, the soundtrack is Eminem’s famous “Cinderella Man” song. Eminem’s long-standing in the city of Detroit has allowed him to have a close affiliation with Detroit sports. This is something that football fans feel like Taylor Swift lacks. Therefore, they claim it comes off as less organic compared to Eminem.
NFL Fans and Taylor Swift Fans Hate Each Other
The NFL is admittedly benefiting from Taylor Swift showing support for her boyfriend, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Kansas City was in a playoff game exclusively streamed on Peacock that NBC claimed to be the most streamed event in US history. Swift, to her credit, did attend the game despite there being negative temperatures in the weather forecast.
However, NFL fans do not share that same sentiment. It has gotten to the point where Swifties and football fans attack each other on social media. Earlier this season, fans inside MetLife Stadium booed loudly when a Taylor Swift promo appeared on the scoreboard.
This may just be one of those things where segments of people who watch football games are never going to get along. So, who is right on this subject? That is for you to decide.
