The Detroit Lions came out of nowhere as legitimate Super Bowl contenders last season and Dan Campbell and company are doing everything in their power to make another run in 2024.
They have been able to keep a lot of the key pieces from last year’s squad, but there’s one player who won’t be suiting up for Detroit and now has his NFL future in serious question.
Cameron Sutton had been a wanted man for weeks after police issued a warrant for his arrest on March 7 on a felony count of domestic battery by strangulation. The Detroit Lions learned of his warrant and encouraged him to turn himself in. They would go on to release him the very next day.
One of the Lions’ top free-agent additions last spring, the veteran cornerback did not have the best first year with the team but he did play in all games. He made 65 tackles and had one interception while starting all 17 regular season games.
Cameron Sutton Cut By Detroit Lions And Hs Mugshot Is Going Viral With NFL Future In Question
The Detroit Lions announced last Thursday that cornerback Cameron Sutton was released by the team. It came one day after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa issued a warrant for Sutton’s arrest on a charge of aggravated battery-domestic violence.
With him struggling last year and not being a top player at his cornerback position, Sutton could be facing the fact of losing his career based on how these charges play out.
His charge is a third-degree felony and carries up to a five-year prison sentence.
On Monday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a video showing Cameron Sutton arriving at a jail in Tampa. They also took a picture and released his mug shot as well, via TMZ.

Fans throughout the NFL chimed in with similar sentiments about the mugshot.
“His eyes look like he’s in some sort of psychosis,” one fan said.
“You can see the evil in his eyes my goodness,” another fan wrote.
Cameron Sutton has turned himself in, ending a weekslong search for the former NFL defensive back who was wanted on a domestic violence warrant.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced the 29-year-old CB arrived at a jail in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday night, nearly a week after it said his attorney informed authorities that the former Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers standout would turn himself in.
“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”
Sutton’s initial arrest warrant charged him with a felony, but prosecutors said Monday he was being formally charged with misdemeanor battery, which carries a maximum one-year jail sentence. Sutton was released from jail Monday on his own recognizance, the state attorney’s office said.
- Detroit Lions President Rod Wood said Sutton had been at the team’s training facility just outside of Detroit.
“We learned about the warrant at the same time everybody else did on social media,” Wood told WJBK-TV Fox 2 last Monday. “We were able to speak to Cam because he was actually in our building. We found him. He was down with our strength staff. He kind of showed up unexpectedly to work out.”
The Lions released Sutton on March 21 after news of the warrant surfaced.
Detroit signed Cameron Sutton to a $33 million, three-year contract a year ago. He helped the franchise win a division title for the first time in three decades along with two playoff games in one postseason for the first time since 1957.
He started in all 17 regular-season games, making a career-high 65 tackles and one interception, and in each of Detroit’s three playoff games.
