The Denver Broncos pass defense struggled last season, ranking 20th in receptions, 22nd in yards, and 28th in touchdowns.
Despite their pass defense struggling last season, Denver has two bright spots in Patrick Surtain II and Ja’Quan McMillian, as both players will likely start next season.
However, the starting left cornerback spot is vacant, and no player on the roster is guaranteed the starting spot heading into the 2024 season.
Mike Klis of 9News expects the Broncos to add an outside cornerback in free agency or the draft.
“Now for the other outside cornerback position. The Broncos thought they had their ideal complementary corner in Damarri Mathis, who had a nice rookie season in 2022 as a fourth-round draft pick. But with Surtain on the other side, opponents went after Mathis early this season and he struggled to the point he was benched after the Broncos’ week 6 loss at Kansas City.
“The Broncos then started seven-year veteran Fabian Moreau in the final 11 games. A noticeable upgrade for most of his stint, Moreau started to slow some in the final month of the season. He is an unrestricted free agent so the Broncos are expected to try and find another one either through free agency, the draft, or continued development of Mathis his third year and Riley Moss in his second.”
The team has a visit scheduled with a cornerback from the AFC North on Friday.

He spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh.

Wallace signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Steelers during the 2022 offseason.
Wallace played in 15 games, starting nine in 2022, with 48 tackles, four interceptions, 13 pass deflections, and a 62.8 PFF Grade. He allowed 41 receptions on 77 targets for 650 yards, three touchdowns, and a 73.0 passer rating.
Wallace played in 16 games, starting nine in 2023, with 38 tackles, two interceptions, 11 pass deflections, and a 57.8 PFF Grade. He allowed 40 receptions on 75 targets for 569 yards, six touchdowns, and a 93.7 passer rating.
The Denver Broncos need an upgrade at the left cornerback position.
The Broncos have three left cornerbacks under contract, including Damarri Mathis, Tremon Smith, and Reese Taylor.
Mathis struggled last season, causing him to get benched in favor of Moreau. Smith played in one defensive snap last season and primarily plays on special teams. Finally, Taylor spent his rookie season on their practice squad.
How will the Denver Broncos handle the LCB position next season? Is Levi Wallace the answer?
