Russell Wilson has expressed his desire to stay with the Denver Broncos, and while that is definitely an intriguing proposition, it’s really unlikely to happen.
The Broncos are expected to move on from Wilson and explore the free agency market or perhaps the 2024 NFL Draft to get either a bridge QB or their quarterback of the future.
Denver Broncos To Keep Russell Wilson?
There’s a reason why the Broncos would want to keep Wilson: finances. After all, releasing Wilson will mean $85 million in dead money for Denver, per Spotrac.
That is definitely a painful hit for a team hoping to rebuild quickly and get to playoff contention. The Broncos would be at a massive competitive disadvantage in such scenario. Hence, financially, resolving things with Wilson and trying one more year with Sean Payton could be beneficial for the team.
At least Wilson himself is open to the possibility.
However, after what happened with Wilson and the Broncos—with Payton benching the veteran QB at the end of the season due to contractual disagreements—it does look like Denver is ready to move on from him.
Why Russell Wilson’s Denver Broncos Return Is Unlikely
According to Jeff Logwold of ESPN, there is “little” to “no chance” that the Denver Broncos keep Russell Wilson this 2024 offseason. In fact, in his interview with multiple executives in the NFL, one even said that the chances of Wilson restructuring his contract with the team to stay and help them is “infinitesimal.”
Here’s what Logwold wrote:
“During Super Bowl week, Payton said he and Wilson had a “great relationship” and that a decision hadn’t been made. But Wilson’s Denver home is up for sale and multiple sources close to him have said he expects to be elsewhere.
“After the very public benching and Wilson’s assertion that the Broncos threatened to bench him halfway through the season if he didn’t adjust his contract, many personnel executives in the league consider the chances of him giving the team a break on his contract very small. One termed it ‘infinitesimal.’”
To be fair to Wilson, the Broncos are largely the ones to blame for that. They could have handled his situation better instead of trying to make him the villain. Instead, based on Wilson’s revelation of what happened, Denver made illegal threats over his contract.
Now, they will have to pay the repercussions.
