Darren Waller gave his honest opinion when he was asked whether Taylor Swift should get a ring from the Kansas City Chiefs, who won their second consecutive Super Bowl just a few weeks ago.
In an ambush interview by TMZ, the New York Giants tight end respectfully said that the international pop star should not get one, but he also conceded that it’s not up to him whether she’ll get one or not.
NFL champion teams have the power to dole the Super Bowl rings out to whoever they choose, from the players, to the coaches and staff, and even to their loved ones.
Darren Waller is not a Taylor Swift hater
Darren Waller elaborated that the honor of getting a Super Bowl ring should belong strictly to anyone “really in the trenches,” meaning the people who put in the grind for the team on and off the field. However, the New York Giants tight end also said that he won’t mind if the Kansas City Chiefs give Swift a replica Super Bowl Ring.
“I mean, maybe get her a replica,” said Waller. “The real ring is for people in meetings, on the field – like, really in the trenches, you know?”
The Kansas City Chiefs are allowed to order as many as 150 Super Bowl rings to give out. Since that will go to the guys who contributed, if Taylor Swift gets one for herself, it would also mean that someone within the organization would be left out.
The Taylor Swift effect
Taylor Swift managed to attend 13 NFL games in total, including the four playoff matches the Kansas City Chiefs played en route to completing their repeat title bid.
With the “Shake It Off” singer supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce from the stands, the Kansas City Chiefs’ female audience has grown exponentially, which ultimately led to the biggest TV viewership since the moon landing in 1969, with 123.4 million people watching Super Bowl 58.
The 34-year-old also helped to reportedly generate $331.5 million for the NFL’s brand last season, according to Apex Marketing Group.
