It’s safe to say Michael Irvin is skeptical of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys hiring Brian Schottenheimer as the franchise’s next head coach.
As the Philadelphia Eagles celebrate their second Lombardi Trophy since the Dallas Cowboys’ most recent Super Bowl appearance 29 years ago, Irvin doesn’t sound like he’s optimistic that the Cowboys will be coming close to a Super Bowl anytime soon.
Michal Irvin Sounds Off on Brian Schottenheimer Hiring
Shortly after Jones and the Cowboys hired Schottenheimer, Irvin sounded extremely skeptical that it is going to work out for Dallas.
“There are great odds against Brian Schottenheimer turning around the Cowboys in a great way,” Irvin told TMZ.
“You start thinking maybe God is doing something our meager minds can’t really consume. … If he takes a great and then produces something great, you’ll say the man did it. But when he takes a Brian Schottenheimer, the least likely of them all, and then he gives him that position, and he does something great, you yourself will say it must’ve been God. Because we damn well know it wasn’t Brian Schottenheimer.”
Schottenheimer is a first-time head coach, who has been on the Cowboys’ staff since arriving as an analyst in 2022, but much of the cynicism regarding his hiring should also be attributed to Jones and Dallas’ hiring process.
Quizzically, the Cowboys blocked former head coach Mike McCarthy‘s chance to interview for the Chicago Bears‘ vacancy only to let his contract lapse days later, before ultimately settling on Schottenheimer, who was on McCarthy’s staff.
Maybe the Schottenheimer hire winds up working out, especially with the benefit of Dak Prescott returning healthy next season, but, Irvin sounds pretty skeptical both of Schottenheimer and the process that led to his hiring.
