After contract talks on a new extension with the Dallas Cowboys broke down, Dak Prescott seems primed to play out the final year of his deal in 2024.
Barring an unforeseen positive turn in Prescott’s contract negotiations with the Cowboys, the star quarterback could be the hottest free agent commodity next offseason.
Prescott, 30, is consistently among the more prolific quarterbacks in the league, even if he boasts just one postseason victory on his resumé with the Cowboys.
Still, several teams could very well be a Prescott away from making a legitimate Super Bowl run with him behind center beginning with the 2025 season.
5 Perfect Fits for Dak Prescott in 2025
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks’ offense is loaded with dynamic playmakers, and it’s not difficult to imagine field-stretcher and matchup nightmare D.K. Metcalf having similar success on the receiving end of Prescott passes as Amari Cooper did in Dallas.
Seattle’s commitment to Geno Smith is lukewarm, at best, and the Seahawks do not have a quarterback of the future currently on the roster. Prescott is the caliber of player who can quickly close the gap on the Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers in the division.
After rebuilding the defense and fortifying the offensive line the past two offseasons, adding a franchise quarterback such as Prescott, could be a missing piece to challenging for the division crown and more.
New York Giants
How the New York Giants approach the 2024 NFL Draft will be quite telling about how the organization views its quarterback situation moving forward.
If general manager Joe Schoen moves up from No. 6 overall to target a quarterback such as J.J. McCarthy or Drake Maye, the Giants will have plotted their course. But, with Daniel Jones returning from a torn ACL, if he’s behind center Week 1 without a top rookie on the roster, the 2024 season could very possibly be an audition for him to finish out the life of his contract.
Depending on how the draft plays out, Schoen and the Giants could very much be in the market for a quarterback next spring. The Giants are projected to have upwards of $47.6 million in cap space, which is plenty of spending flexibility to get involved in the Dak Prescott sweepstakes. If New York adds a top wide receiver in this year’s class to bolster its offensive weapons, perhaps the opportunity to play the Cowboys twice each season could be a drawing card for Prescott to take his talents to the Swamps of Jersey.
Las Vegas Raiders
After signing Gardner Minshew, and paying him starting quarterback money, the Raiders could be set up to be big players at the top of the quarterback market in 2025.
As things stand, the Raiders might not be a quarterback away from challenging the Kansas City Chiefs for AFC West supremacy, but, a strong draft class could move the ball forward toward Las Vegas making a legitimate playoff push in Antonio Pierce’s first full season as head coach.
Signing a quarterback like Prescott would elevate the Raiders into the realm of legitimate contenders, especially with him having the chance to build a connection with All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams. The Raiders are currently projected to have just over $73 million in cap space in 2025, which would easily position owner Mark Davis to make a major splash by bringing a major piece to Vegas.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings could go from losing Kirk Cousins in 2024 to shopping at the top of the quarterback market and landing Dak Prescott in 2025.
Certainly, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is positioning the Vikings to trade up for a quarterback in this year’s draft by acquiring an additional first-round pick from the Houston Texans. But, if Minnesota can’t move up they’ll need to find a long-term solution in 2025.
If the Vikings can re-sign All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, and with Jordan Addison on the opposite side of the field, Minnesota has the kind of receiving duo in place to vault into the playoff conversation with Prescott behind center.
Thanks to having more than $104 million in projected cap space for 2025, Minnesota could be positioned to make the strongest offer to Prescott, if they don’t walk away from this year’s draft with their franchise quarterback in the fold.
Dallas Cowboys
It’s entirely possible that if Dak Prescott plays well, and the Cowboys make a deep playoff run in 2024, Jerry Jones will come to his senses and commit to his star quarterback for the next several years.
Dallas is primed to be significantly better positioned against the cap, with upwards of $83.1 million in spending flexibility in 2025 which could make a Prescott contract more palatable.
However, a Prescott-Cowboys reunion may require mending fences on both sides. Winning would go a long way toward changing the narrative and the feelings Prescott and the organization may have about making a long-term commitment to one another. From a Cowboys perspective, it has to be unsettling thinking about turning the page from Prescott, who played his way into the MVP conversation in 2023, to an unknown commodity such as Trey Lance or starting over at the position with a roster built to compete immediately.
