Dak Prescott has been a great quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys ever since he was drafted with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He’s been a consistent performer who helped the Cowboys re-establish themselves as a top team in the NFC East.
However, recent postseason performances have put question marks on people’s heads on whether he’s still the man who can lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title. His most recent forays in the postseason is most likely one of the reasons why the team still hasn’t met with him to negotiate a new contract.
Dallas Cowboys are yet to meet Dak Prescott over a new contract
The Spun’s Tzvi Machlin reported that the Dallas Cowboys and Prescott’s camp have not had any discussions about his future amid talks of his contract situation being one of the more interesting narratives at the NFL Combine.
Machlin wrote that NFL insider Jane Slater revealed the news of the two parties not yet meeting. However, she mentioned that it’s possible that a new deal would be minted in the summer:
“There have been conversations aplenty with the media regarding the matter, but the Dallas Cowboys and their star quarterback have yet to begin discussions on a new deal,” Grant Gordon of NFL.com wrote.
“Dak Prescott and the Cowboys have had no talks at all on a contract extension, NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported Wednesday.
“Slater added, however, that it’s unlikely to be cause for alarm and that she could foresee a deal coming to fruition closer to August.”
Is Prescott still the right man for the Cowboys?
Prescott has come under fire for his abysmal playoff performances over the past couple of years. He was terrible against the Green Bay Packers last season, where his two interceptions undid his impressive 403-yard, two-touchdown game. His stat line against the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 Divisional Round wasn’t putting him in a positive light, either.
However, he is still a key figure for the Cowboys’ regular-season success. He finished his most recent NFL campaign with 4516 passing yards and 36 TDs on 69.5% pass completion and only nine interceptions. He also had a terrific QB rating at 105.9.
While it’s still likely that Prescott would get a new contract before the 2024 season begins, he needs to do a lot of work to shed his reputation of a postseason choke artist.
