Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has never been a fan of the transfer portal. He is a fan of the recruit and develop method with the transfer portal only being used in certain situations. Ahead of their bowl game against the Kentucky Wildcats, Swinney blasted the transfer portal and had a pretty good reason why he doesn’t like it.
Dabo Swinney Blasts Transfer Portal
The biggest problem that Swinney has is the tampering issue which he told David Hale of ESPN.
“The problem is tampering. And we could fix it easily if they’d let football people fix it. But they usually don’t listen to us.”
Swinney doesn’t seem to have a problem with players transferring. However, many of these players enter the portal and then find a new program within 24-48 hours. This signals some type of tampering by the other program. It makes it very difficult to keep talent when other teams can easily contact players through a variety of outlets.
Need Some Tweaking But Tampering Is Hard To Deal With
In the modern age, tampering in any sport is hard to deal with. Every player has personal contact devices with many outlets to be contacted. It would be a huge undertaking to make sure that every conversation that a player had was within the rules. However, I do think that the process needs some tweaking. The amount of movement does not feel sustainable but because this is such a new process, it’s hard to see the trickle-down effects right now.
Dabo Swinney isn’t a fan of the transfer portal but admitted that he will do everything he can to fill out the roster for next season. Can Clemson get back to being one of the premier programs in the country?
