The Dallas Cowboys are looking to find another impact pass-rusher with the departure of Randy Gregory this past offseason. They might have a guy currently on their roster that is capable of filling that void. That player is second-round pick, Sam Williams, from Ole Miss. Williams comes to Dallas after an incredible final season at Ole Miss. In that season he recorded 12.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss. Those stats helped him reach third-team AP All-American honors.
Sam Williams looking to become the next great Cowboys pass rusher
Williams should get ample opportunity to show himself during his rookie season. He will see plenty of snaps opposite of DeMarcus Lawrence. The former Rebel has been facing NFL-caliber offensive lineman throughout his career at Ole Miss. Last season he went up against the likes of Charles Cross and Evan Neal, both of whom were top ten picks.
Jerry Jones told Williams in a pre-draft interview that he needed to find “another Micah Parsons.” While those are lofty expectations, Williams has a similar skill set to Parsons. They are both great athletes and use their speed to their advantage. Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was the one that worked out Williams at Ole Miss’ pro day. So he knows what type of player Williams is and how to utilize him.
Before the start of camp, it appears Williams will compete with Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler for a starting role. No matter who wins the starting spot Cowboys fans should be confident in their pass rushers heading into the season even with the loss of Gregory. Lawrence, Armstrong, Parsons, Fowler, and Williams will be able to get after the passer and Quinn should be able to get the best out of that group.
