The Dallas Cowboys were spectacular in a showdown with their division rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. Philadelphia has widely been considered the best team in football over the course of the season and the Dallas simply embarrassed them prior to what was without a doubt a fun night to live in Dallas, Texas. This team will without a doubt be first in line for a long list of accolades once award season rolls around and no one deserves it more than their elite starting quarterback.
Cowboys QB Hands Down Best Player this Season
Certainly the strongest part of the Cowboys game on Sunday was Dak Prescott at the quarterback position. After a few tough losses early in the season, Prescott has played remarkably down the stretch including going 24-39 for 271 passing yards and two touchdowns against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Prescott looks like a leader amid a stout Philadelphia front that now sports former Colts All-Pro linebacker Shaq Leonard.
Prescott has put up absolutely phenomenal numbers so far this season as he has become the absolute favorite for the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. Prescott has the third highest quarterback rating in the NFL at a remarkable number of 107.5 as well as leading the league with 28 touchdown passes. He is also third in passing yards at 3,505 this season as he has looked the part of the franchise quarterback down the stretch.
Cowboys MVP Candidate Looks Legitimate Going into December
The real question will be whether Prescott will be able to hold off San Francisco 49ers system quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy is first in the league in passer rating at a ridiculous number of 116.9 as he has made a tremendous surge following his rookie season and being primarily known as Mr. Irrelevant. There is no argument that Purdy has had a remarkable season and it is certainly going to come down to the wire. Here is why I think Prescott deserves it no contest.
Purdy is a System Quarterback
While Brock Purdy has established himself as an effective quarterback in the NFL, he clearly isn’t an elite talent in his own right. As a Bengals fan, I recall watching that game where his accuracy was off when any of the timing of the plays was thrown off. Based on that observation, I’d say that Purdy is an excellent system quarterback who can be incredibly accurate when plays are exactly as designed.
It was clear however that Purdy isn’t capable of improvisation with his arm as any time the timing was thrown off, Purdy either scrambled or threw some wild passes that became easy interceptions.
Prescott has Established Arm Talent
One of the most impressive things to see this season is for Prescott to be able to put up the numbers he has without effective secondary receivers. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has absolutely emerged after a slow start to his career but Prescott has made it happen purely with his arm as he has needed to make accurate throws. Another major point is that Prescott is the focal point to his offense: Purdy is still a secondary cog to elite running back Christian McCaffrey.
While there has been a long list of candidates for the MVP award this season, I believe that it clearly belongs to the Cowboys gunslinger over a 49ers game manager.
