The New England Patriots are reportedly expected to make major changes to their roster at quarter within the next two months. The Patriots clearly needed to make a move at quarterback following Mac Jones’ struggles under center this season.
The New England Patriots need to move on from Mack Jones
This is the perfect time for the Patriots to select a new quarterback. The Patriots need to give new head coach Jerod Mayo a new quarterback to build around. Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick gifted the Patriots the third overall pick in the draft on his way out, and the team is in a prime spot to select one of the top prospects in this year’s draft.
The Patriots plan to do that.
The Patriots are looking at Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels
According to Mass Live, New England’s leadership plan is to take a quarterback with the third overall pick. They don’t expect to be in the running for Caleb Williams and are looking intently at North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye and LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels:
The team’s braintrust arrived in Indianapolis with a plan in place to address their quarterback situation and are ready to make multiple moves in the coming months. This three-step process could net the Patriots the future face of their franchise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a rookie will be starting in New England next season.
According to multiple sources, the Patriots are planning to draft a quarterback with the No. 3 pick. One NFL executive, outside of New England, relayed that it’s widely expected in league circles that quarterbacks will be selected with the first three picks in April.
Joe Flacco could be in New England next season
Per the report, the Patriots are considering giving their rookie quarterback a chance to develop under Mayo’s coaching staff before playing them. They list Jacoby Brissett and Joe Flacco as likely options because of their connections to the Patriots coaching staff:
Drafting a signal caller is only one step in this process. According to a source, the Patriots plan on signing a veteran free agent quarterback, too. The team is in no rush to start a rookie immediately and could play that veteran if they think it would benefit the younger quarterback to sit for a season.
The Patriots have lacked good quarterback play since Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team needs to reset the clock at quarterback. Resetting the quarterback clock in the same offseason they hired a new GM and head coach should work in the favor of the Patriots.
But it also means the rookie regime will make one of the riskiest decisions they can make in the league in their first offseason.
