The Colorado football team and their Head Coach will always do things they way they want to, including enforcing harsh rules.
Head Coach Deion Sanders removed an unknown player from a recent team meeting after an alarm on his cellphone went off. Sanders paused until the alarm finished going off before asking the player to leave the team for the day. It is unknown who the player was, and if anything else arose from the situation, but it is just another snippet from the Buffaloes that shows how the program has been run under Sanders.
Colorado Football Head Coach Deion Sanders Throws Player Out of Meeting Following a Cellphone Alarm
Since becoming a Head Coach in the college football landscape, Deion Sanders has been a major point of discussion for news outlets and analysts alike. Sanders is one of, if not the, most decorated players to ever become a Head Coach at the collegiate level. As flashy and exceptional of a player as Sanders has been, his coaching career thus far has been much different as the Buffaloes have proven themselves to be a tough challenge.
With each move the coach continues to sit under the microscope, including his decision to avoid conducting in-home visits with recruits. The most recent incident to go under speculation came as a player or staff member recording caught Sanders telling an athlete to leave after his phone alarm went off.
In the recording, Sanders is giving a speech to his team when an alarm begins to go off in the background of the video. Sanders stops his speech after the alarm rings multiple times, then there is a brief pause after the alarm stops before the coach resumes. The coach points in the direction of the alarm and then tells the players, “Get out…I will see you Wednesday.”
The video cuts out before it can be seen if the player exits the room, but Sanders ends the meeting shortly after so it is likely that the player did not.
Colorado Football Continues No Nonsense Trend Under the Watchful Eye of Sanders
If there is one thing for sure with Colorado football, it is that you should not bring a phone into any practices or team meetings. The unfortunate irony of this situation is that the athlete who got in trouble for his alarm going off was recorded by another individual with a cellphone. It is unclear if the person recording had permission to have a phone, since he is in the front row, but regardless Sanders has made it clear rules are made to be followed.
Sanders previously was criticized for his coaching methods after he benched his star defensive back son Shilo Sanders in the SWAC Championship for being late to a team meeting.
At times, Sanders has not been the most strict coach as he allowed both of his sons to miss Colorado football practice for a fashion week trip to Paris. However, the coach has seemed determined to show that he allows players and staff to enjoy life, but still demands 100% effort when in the team facility.
Have the Colorado Buffaloes Football Staff Taken the Correct Approach?
After the news of a player being removed from the team for a day due to an honest mistake, many individuals across Social Media felt that Sanders was too harsh on the student athlete. However, a large number of fans and football analysts have come to the defense of Sanders as he is only enforcing a rule that had been made previously clear.
In a time where people are quick to throw someone under the bus or accuse an individual of doing something terrible, Sanders having a quick hook with his players should not be a concern. As embarrassing and upsetting as it must be for the athlete, there were clear rules in place for the team and it would be unfair to make an exception.
Much of football and coaching has begun to go ‘Soft’ by the standards of old school coaches and their methods. However, the tough-love and no nonsense approach of Sanders could be what helps result in their best play on the field.
