Since the beginning of the transfer portal’s spring window, the Colorado football program has seen an unprecedented number of its own players leave Boulder, Colorado. On Monday, five players, including rotational defenders Chazz Wallace and Jaden Milliner-Jones, darted for the portal, while on Tuesday, five more players, headlined by former five-star recruit Cormani McClain, went portal hopping. Another five players transferred over the past two days, but the Buffaloes could be getting an incoming transfer in their already-loaded class of arriving players.
Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports states that Colorado football will host former Tennessee Volunteers linebacker Elijah Herring on Friday. Wiltfong also reports that the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Penn State Nittany Lions are also in the mix for Herring. Colorado will compete in the Big 12 next fall.
Former Tennessee Volunteers LB Elijah Herring: Visiting Colorado Football on Friday
Elijah Herring, formerly of the Tennessee Volunteers, will head to Boulder, Colorado, on Friday to visit the Buffaloes and head coach Deion Sanders. A three-star prospect in the class of 2022 per 247Sports, Herring landed with the Tennessee Volunteers, picking the SEC program over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Duke Blue Devils, and Arizona State Sun Devils. The Tennessee native had 11 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, and two sacks as a true freshman. He played a much more significant role in 2023, registering a team-best 80 tackles with four TFLs and a sack. The Vols went 9-4, blanking the Iowa Hawkeyes 35-0 in the Citrus Bowl.

Herring could be a welcome addition to the Colorado football program, with three linebackers leaving the team via the transfer portal this offseason. Former Alabama Crimson Tide second-level defender Demouy Kennedy, who spent three seasons in the SEC, joined Colorado last season but left after one season. He had 13 tackles and two TFLs in ten games. Eoghan Kerry is also out with the Buffaloes. During his true freshman campaign last season, he tallied four tackles for Coach Prime.
Colorado Football: LB Depth Chart
Despite the long list of players leaving Colorado this spring, the top of their linebacker depth chart remains unchanged. The senior trio of LaVonta Bentley, Trevor Woods, and Omarion Cooper lead the defense among the best tacklers. Bentley spent four seasons at Clemson before landing with Colorado in 2023. He posted 68 tackles, 11 TFLs, and five sacks in 12 games. Meanwhile, Woods had 56 tackles last season, while Cooper tallied 37 in nine games.
Colorado also added transfer linebackers Jaylen Wester and DJ McKinney. Wester arrives from Florida Atlantic, where he collected 111 tackles and 12 TFLs across two seasons. McKinney played for the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2023.
