On April 27, the Colorado football program will conclude spring ball with its annual spring game. However, two weeks before the team’s exhibition, the Buffaloes have lost a healthy number of players to the transfer portal’s spring window. At the time of this writing, 15 ex-Colorado players have entered the portal, headlined by former five-star mega recruit and corner Cormani McClain. They have also lost a pair of linebackers and a wideout in the mix.
Coach Deion Sanders sat down with the media on Thursday, speaking on the current state of his program and, more specifically, the portal. In an interview with the DNVR Buffs Podcast, Sanders talked about the portal’s current state and debriefed the media about his sons, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, recruiting the best players on the market.
Colorado Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders: Talks Transfer Portal
The Colorado football program is experiencing a mass exodus via the transfer portal. However, head coach Deion Sanders is not fazed by the alarming number of players darting from Boulder, Colorado. Coach Prime talked to Jake Schwanitz of the DNVR Buffs Podcast, and when pressed about the transfer portal, he stated he is more worried about the talent coming in than coming out.
Sanders said, “A lot of people are fighting for backups. When a guy is a starter, and he transfers, you’ve really got to think about that. We have some coming in for visits pretty soon. We can attract those types of players, but I don’t think we’re losing those types of players. And if we do, we’re good. We’re good.”
Sanders believes that of the 15 players that have left Colorado during the spring window, none are considered impactful departures. Former five-star recruit Cormani McClain, rotational defenders Chazz Wallace and Jaden Milliner-Jones, and starting offensive tackle Savion Washington have left the Buffaloes this week.
Sanders: Talks Having His Kids Help With Recruitment
Additionally, Sanders spoke about his kids, starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, and helping recruit transfers. This week, Shilo and Shedeur went viral for posting on Instagram suggesting those in the transfer portal message them about joining the Colorado football program.
Coach Prime on players recruiting other players.
“Your most prominent players are your best recruiters. Players recruit players man. They know who the dawgs are and who the cats are.”

“Your most prominent players are your best recruiters. Players recruit players, man. They know who the dawgs are and who the cats are,” said Deion Sanders regarding Shilo and Shedeur using social media to help recruit.
Colorado Football: Looking for Improved 2024 Season
Despite massive expectations amid coach Deion Sanders’ first season with the Colorado Buffaloes, they posted a 4-8 record in his inaugural campaign. Colorado, led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, scored 28.2 points per game, the 60th-best mark in the country. Sanders threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns against three interceptions. Two-way star and All-American Travis Hunter posted 57 receptions, 721 yards, and five touchdowns.
Meanwhile, the defense struggled mightily, surrendering 34.8 points per game, the ninth-worst average in the nation. Shilo Sanders posted a team-best 70 tackles in 11 games and will return to the Buffaloes next fall. Meanwhile, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig led the way with three interceptions and will join Sanders in the backend of the secondary in 2024.
