A quarterback the Denver Broncos are reportedly targeting in the 2024 NFL Draft was recently compared to former San Francisco 49ers signal caller Colin Kaepernick. After releasing Russell Wilson, the Broncos have one of the weakest quarterback rooms in the league this offseason.
The Denver Broncos need a true QB1
Head coach Sean Payton has said the team is interested in adding to the position in the draft. The Broncos hold the No. 12 pick, so the team won’t have a chance to take one of the top three quarterbacks in the draft.
The Broncos are interested in a quarterback who quickly moved up draft boards following the College Football Playoffs–J.J. McCarthy. They might have to trade up to the No. 4 spot to assure themselves of drafting McCarthy.
J.J. McCarthy compared to Colin Kaepernick
Per 9 News, former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim Miller said the Broncos shouldn’t be too disappointed if they aren’t able to trade up for McCarthy. Miller compared McCarthy to Kaepernick because they both lack versatility:
“Remember when Colin Kaepernick was with (Jim) Harbaugh out in San Francisco?’’ Miller said. “Everything was a fastball. He could never make touch throws. He could never go up and down, over the linebacker because everything was a three-quarter (delivery) fastball. (McCarthy’s) a lot like that and he misses a lot of throws over the middle where he’s behind the receiver.”
Ouch.
Can McCarthy thrive without Jim Harbaugh?
Kaepernick played well for a few seasons until Jim Harbaugh left the 49ers for Michigan. However, the teams were able to figure out Kaepernick around the 2014 season. McCarthy, like Kaepernick, thrived in Harbaugh’s quarterback-friendly system. But can he be like Andrew Luck and play consistently well without him?
