Colin Kaepernick’s foundation, Know Your Rights Camp, recently held a workshop in Detroit, the same city that will host the 2024 NFL Draft starting Thursday. A speaker at the event took a shot at the NFL a few days before the league was set to have one of its biggest events of the year in the same city.
Colin Kaepernick’s foundation was in Detroit
In a post on Instagram by Kaepernick’s long-time partner, Nessa Diab, Know Your Rights Camp was held in the Motor City to teach “young minds” about their legal rights:
“Our 12th camp was held at Cass Technical High School in Detroit and was an unforgettable day filled with inspiration and learning. We welcomed eager young minds from across the region, immersing them in their rich heritage while ensuring they learned their legal rights.
Youth in attendance were presented with valuable knowledge about finance and opportunities within the tech industry. The event also emphasized the importance of nurturing both the mind and body through presentations about mental health and physical health. By the end of the day, every child left with their spirits soaring, equipped with the knowledge and tools to transform their communities and the world.”
Campers got an NFL/Kaepernick history lesson
They also received an education on Kaepernick’s history and the NFL. Per video of the post on Kaepernick’s Instagram page, the speaker talked about the former NFL quarterback’s exile from the league:
“Possibility is the one thing you cannot allow people to take from you,” the speaker in the video said. “From here on out, know that you’re not just representing yourself and your family; you’re representing a community and a city that will hold you down.
Fully inderstand that when that big NFL Draft comes here in two weeks it’s that same organization that has exiled him from the league because he stuck up and stood up for us. This man is going to be in your history books.”
She said those in attendance were lucky to be close to someone who was an icon for risking their career to make a difference.
“There will be streets, there will be schools named after Colin Kaepernick,” the speaker said.
The camp was held right before the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit
The camp being held less than a week from the draft and in the same city doesn’t feel like a coincidence. As recently as last season, Kaepernick was still asking teams to let him try out for a spot in the NFL. However, presenting young members of Michigan’s society with a cynical view of the NFL a few days before the draft comes to Detroit is an odd way to try and get back into the league.
One has to admire Kaepernick for seeing his way through a cause.
Per the video, the children in attendance were rewarded for their perseverance through the lectures. Kaepernick said there were Ben & Jerry’s ice cream coupons and free Nike Air Force 1’s for campers.
