The Philadelphia Eagles have not yet announced their plans to retain head coach Nick Sirianni or members of his coaching staff for the 2024 season. The Eagles are reportedly planning to make changes with at least one key coordinator position, if not both.
The Eagles suffered a humiliating collapse to end a season where they hoped to avenge their Super Bowl loss from last year. Many fans and pundits thought Sirianni’s job could be in jeopardy, one season after winning the NFC Championship, after the Eagles finished the 2023 campaign, losing six of their last seven games.
The Eagles are preparing for a change at offensive coordinator. Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson has interviewed for three head coaching gigs this month. Johnson could be fired by the Eagles this offseason after the poor performance in the last two months of the season.
According to the NFL Network, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was named a candidate to replace Johnson.
The Philadelphia Eagles want to change the defense
Johnson might be gaining promotion this offseason after a questionable job in Philadelphia, but the Eagles are expected to fire two coaches on the defensive side of the ball. According to Ralph Vacchiano with Fox Sports, Sirianni, if retained, is expected to have to fire defensive coaches Matt Patricia and Sean Desai.
Former Eagles assistant coach Dennard Wilson is a candidate the team wants back to be the defensive coordinator next season:
But a team source said that Lurie, like many in the organization, has soured on his choices. In fact, one team source said that if Sirianni was allowed to keep his job, Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman would likely insist that he fire both his coordinators, if he wasn’t planning to do it anyway.
Sirianni already demoted defensive coordinator Sean Desai late in the season and handed the play-calling over to senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia, though the defense only got worse from there.
There is an internal belief that he made a big mistake hiring Desai from outside the organization while passing over popular defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson, who immediately left to take the same job with the Baltimore Ravens. They could fix that by hiring Wilson to replace Patricia and Desai.
The Eagles wanted to move on from Nick Sirianni
The Eagles reportedly were interested in hiring Bill Belichick to replace Sirianni for 2024. However, Belichick did not want to take the job due to the scrutiny Eagles’ coaches face from the media and fans, not to mention ownership.
It’s unknown if the Eagles will replace Sirianni. But it’s clear that important changes will be made to the staff before next season. The Eagles could have two new coordinators calling players in September. That might not help as much as Eagles fans hope, as the team was forced to do that in 2023 with little success.
