The Cleveland Browns are one of the most talented defensive teams in the NFL, and every single player in their roster would become instant stars somewhere else.
Greg Newsome is one such player. The third-year CB out of Northwestern has been a revelation over the past year, and there’s an increased interest in his availability as the Browns mull on activating his fifth-year option.
It may be a good move for the Browns to move on from him if he’s not in their long-term plans. However, one insider who’s well connected to the organization dismisses any notion of Newsome leaving the Dawg Pound.
Zac Jackson’s thoughts on Greg Newsome leaving the Cleveland Browns: ‘Probably not’
The Athletic’s Zac Jackson is a trusted name when it comes to anything related to the Cleveland Browns, and he himself dismissed any notions of the team moving away from him.
However, he did point out reasons why he is such a desirable acquisition for any NFL team, as written by Heavy’s J.R. DaGroote:
“Newsome is a good player at a premium position, and he was a first-round pick of this Berry-led regime,” Jackson wrote on February 19. “But with Martin Emerson Jr. a year away from being eligible for an extension and Denzel Ward already paid at the top of the cornerback market, it’s fair to at least wonder how long the Browns can keep what’s probably the league’s best cornerback trio.”
Newsome will definitely warrant getting a decent payday from the Browns or whichever team will want to trade for him. He blossomed as a member of the secondary unit in 2023, starting on most games he was available for. He had an impressive stat line of two interceptions for 34 yards and a pick-six, 14 pass deflections, 0.5 sacks, and 34 solo tackles.

Having too many good options at corner is a good problem to have. However, the Cleveland Browns should be careful in considering Greg Newsome’s future. If he manages to become an All-Pro with another team that gives him the money and playing time he deserves, they will miss out on having him in his best years.
