Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon signed an extension with the Houston Texans worth $27 million.
The extension, which is good for three years, was signed after the Texans gave a seventh-round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals for the rights to Mixon. Houston guarantees $13 million in the new extension.
Joe Mixon was consistent for the Cincinnati Bengals before getting traded to the Houston Texans
Former Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon has been a solid contributor since coming into the league as a second-round pick in 2017. Mixon, who is 27-years-old, rushed for over 1,000 yards for the fourth time in his career in 2023.
Mixon’s nine rushing touchdowns were good for the second-most touchdowns he has scored on the ground in his entire career. Mixon also had one of his most productive years receiving out of the backfield in 2023.
His last two seasons were his most productive when it comes to receiving out of the backfield. He had 441 receiving yards and 376 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023, respectively. His 60 receptions and 52 receptions in 2022 and 2023 were also the two highest marks of his career.
Mixon is one of the most accomplished running backs in Bengals’ history. He has the third-most rushing yards in Bengals history with 6,412. He has the second-most rushing touchdowns in Cincinnati history with 49.

Many fans think the Houston Texans overpaid for former Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon
Along with a seventh-round pick, Houston is now paying Joe Mixon $9 million a year. Only six running backs in the NFL make more than $9 million per year.
The new era of avoiding running back payment has caused many fans to think that the Houston Texans have given up too much for an aging running back.
Texans GM Nick Caserio explained the way in which he wanted to build depth in an article from ESPN.
“The big thing [coach] DeMeco [Ryans] and I have talked about on a consistent basis is just trying to build as deep and consistent a roster top to bottom,” Caserio said at the combine last month. “We’re just trying to optimize our opportunities, try to take advantage of our opportunities to add players to our team.
“It’s just finding the right people with the right mindset and the right mentality that fit the program that we’re trying to build.”
While signing Mixon might prove to be a better fit for the scheme of the Houston Texans, many fans are questioning whether the $27 million price tag is worth it.
