Chicago Bears Urged To Pursue $40 Million Wide Receiver in Free Agency

While it’s still early into the season, teams around the league are already looking at which prospects will be available by free agency next year. For the Chicago Bears, though, an NFL analysis is projecting them to pursue San Francisco 49ers’ Charvarius Ward.

Ward is poised to be the top cornerback available in the 2025 NFL free agency, despite turning 29 in May. Currently a key player for the San Francisco 49ers, he has significantly outperformed the three-year, $40.5 million contract he signed in 2022. In the previous season, Ward showcased his skills by recording a league-high 23 passes defended, along with five interceptions and 72 tackles, while allowing a mere 64.5 passer rating against him.

Ward’s status as a defensive leader for the NFC champion 49ers adds to his market appeal. His consistent performance and ability to thrive under pressure make him an attractive option for teams in need of a reliable cornerback. Adaptation to a new defensive coordinator may play a role in his future success, but barring any injuries, Ward is expected to command a lucrative contract.

With several high-caliber corners set to hit the market, Ward’s value is projected to be substantial. He could surpass the $20.3 million annual salary earned by A.J. Terrell earlier this season, positioning him among the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league. As the 2024 season unfolds, Ward’s performance will be crucial in shaping his free agency prospects.

Ward is poised to become a popular name when free agency starts next year. According to an analysis by Bleacher Report, the Bears should make a more for the 49ers star.

“While Tyrique Stevenson hasn’t been a bad player by any means this season, he hasn’t been much better than average. According to Pro Football Focus, the second-year pro has allowed nearly a 60 percent completion rate (17 of 29) when targeted and earned a 62.3 coverage grade through Chicago’s first four games.

The front office is currently projected to have about $73 million of cap space available this offseason, per Over The Cap, so it has the funds to go after a big fish and have one of the best cornerback duos in the league.

Paired with Jaylon Johnson, completions would be hard to come by in The Windy City seeing as Ward has 67 career passes defended, including four in the first four weeks of 2024.”

The 49ers face a potential offseason dilemma as Ward is set to hit free agency, with the Bears poised to make a competitive offer. With quarterback Brock Purdy’s expected salary increase, the 49ers may struggle to retain key players like Ward, who has been instrumental on defense.

The Bears have significant cap space and a promising roster led by rookie Caleb Williams, heightening the urgency for the 49ers to secure a strong playoff performance. Ultimately, their ability to manage the salary cap will be crucial in retaining Ward.
