As it stands, Charvarius Ward is on the final year of his contract for the San Francisco Warriors. By next year, though, the cornerback can land a good deal as one of the top free agents when the summer of 2205 comes around.
Ward is gearing up for the 2024 season after a standout year that saw him earn his first Pro Bowl selection. Despite battling ongoing pain from core and back issues—stemming from his time with the Kansas City Chiefs—he excelled in 2023, finishing tied for fourth in the NFL with five interceptions and leading the league with 23 pass breakups.
After the 49ers’ Super Bowl LVIII loss, Ward underwent core muscle surgery, a procedure he had postponed for years. He’s focused on returning to full strength in time for training camp, with hopes of building on his impressive performance. As he enters the final year of his three-year, $40.5 million contract, he is aware that his potential success could make him a highly sought-after free agent.
While the 49ers face decisions about retaining key players, including wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and others, Ward’s contributions have solidified his importance on the team. His defensive skills have been pivotal, earning him recognition for both his coverage and tackling abilities.
In March 2022, the cornerback signed a three-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He had a standout season, recording a personal best in tackles and interceptions. His skills on the field earned him Pro Bowl honors in 2023, and he played a vital role in helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII.
San Francisco 49ers’ Charvarius Ward Predicted To Get $20 Million Per Year in 2025 Free Agency
Similar to Detroit Lions’ Alim McNeill and Kansas City Chiefs’ Trey Smith, Ward is projected to land a new deal by next year. According to an NFL analysis by Bleacher Report, that deal can reach around $20 million per year.
“Ward deserves to be among the league’s highest-paid cornerbacks, and that’s unlikely to change, barring injury or a massive San Francisco collapse—which feels unlikely, but the Eagles’ 2023 breakdown was unexpected too.
For Ward, adapting to new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen will be key. Sorensen will be San Francisco’s third defensive coordinator in as many seasons. Ward might top the extension A.J. Terrell signed this offseason, worth $20.3 million annually.
With several good corners slated to hit the market, though, he might come in just a bit below that number,” Bleacher Report’s Scouting Department wrote.
The 49ers stars aims to improve even further, expressing a desire to convert more pass breakups into interceptions. He’s taking on a leadership role within the defensive backfield, aspiring to elevate both his game and that of his teammates.
Though he hopes to remain with the 49ers, Ward acknowledges the business side of football, trusting his agent to navigate contract negotiations while he focuses on performing at his best. In any case, landing that projected deal can be a good turn of events for his career next year.
