Without a doubt, last season’s campaign ranks among the worst in the Chicago Bears’ history as a franchise. While there are a lot of factors to consider, Matt Eberflus and the coaching staff are some of the biggest reasons why the team didn’t perform well.
Before the previous season began, the Bears had a 3-14 record in 2022. In 2023, that record improved to 7-10, placing them last in the NFC North division together with the Minnesota Vikings.
Throughout that run, the Bears ranked 18th out of 32 teams when it came to offense. Chicago’s defense was also 20th in the entire NFL last season.
Even with a disappointing performance, the Bears had a bright spot in Justin Fields. The soon-to-be-free agent is the fourth quarterback to record 5,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards during his first 30 starts since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.
Chicago Bears’ Coaching Staff Rated to be One of the Worst For 2024
While the Baltimore Ravens are projected to have a capable coaching staff next season, the Bears are on the opposite side of the fence. Jordan Dajani explains more in his article for CBS:
“Eberflus keeps his job for another year, which was a decision that surprised some people. Waldron may be an upgrade over Luke Getsy, even if he didn’t exactly receive a glowing review from Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and then Washington joins Chicago’s staff after working as a defensive line coach for the Bills over the past few seasons. He last served as a defensive coordinator in 2019 for the Panthers.
The question here is what does Eberflus need to do in 2024 to keep off the hot seat? Adding Caleb Williams is an exciting possibility, and could it buy Eberflus more time? That’s something the front office will have to debate,” Dajani wrote.
Chicago fans will have to rely on free agency, the impending addition of Caleb Williams, or a total overhaul of the coaching staff to become better next season. In any case, it’d be best to keep a close eye on the Bears to see if they can get out of the rut they’re in.
